ORGAN DONATION – THE MOST HEROIC ACT YOU CAN DO!

Organ donation is a gesture of great generosity and social harmony. In India, millions of people are waiting for the donated organs for transplantation, but only a few of them are fortunate enough to get this valuable gift. Organ donation allows life to continue in a new way i.e. by pledging your organs (deceased donation), you can save up to 8 lives after your death.

In this article, I’m going to highlight some key points that depict the dire need for organ donation in India at the present time.

Have a look!

  1. It is estimated that every year around 1.5 lakh people suffer from end-stage kidney failure, out of which only 3000 people are fortunate enough to get the donors.
  2. Likewise, every year around 2 lakh people died because of liver & other organs failure.
  3. The organs & tissues that can be donated include kidney, heart, lungs, skin, liver, bone marrow, bone fragments, cornea, pancreas, intestines, tendons, etc.
  4. We can all become organ donors, regardless of age, caste, religion, community, current or past health status.
  5. Children can also become organ donors after taking a pledge for organ donation.
  6. Your general health and medical history are more important factors in determining whether you can donate your organs or not.
  7. Although most transplants are carried out through the deceased donation process, you can still donate certain organs while you are alive. However, in India living donation can only be done by family members or close relatives of patients.
  8. Living donors can donate a portion of their liver, a lobe of the lung, and either of their two kidneys.
  9. If organ transplantation has been practiced for more than 50 years in the world, the survival and quality of life of transplant patients will surely improve.
  10. Today, 90 to 95% of donated kidneys still function after 1 year, and 80% of donated kidneys are still fully functional five years after the transplant.
  11. In India, there is a huge gap between the retrieved & the required organs for transplants, as a result, in our country many patients died every year while waiting for their turn.
  12. Organ donation and the gift of one's body to science are not connected.
  13. Organ donation is used to save or improve the lives of patientswhile the gift of one's body to science enables medicine and researchers to make progress in their research work.

The donation of organs not only has a great effect on the life of the person who receives the organ, but it can also be important for the donor family. In fact, studies have shown that families who have donated the organs of their loved ones after death feel contented or satisfied, as their loss serves a worthy purpose.

The Bottomline

Organ donation fosters a spirit of generosity in society. Moreover, by pledging organs, one is intended to save the lives of others. This makes ‘Organ Donation” a most heroic act that we all can willingly do for humanity.
